The second trimester of pregnancy tends to be quite different than the first trimester for many women. Many of symptoms that may have plagued you in the last few months should soon start fading and you might even feel more like your old self. Women can expect the easiest three months of pregnancy during the second trimester. You may feel more energetic as the tiredness and morning sickness fade away. There is also added excitement as you may soon feel your baby start to move. Anticipation also sets in as you start preparing for your little one's arrival. Your baby is growing quite quickly. You will be able to compare the development from the first trimester to the second trimester as you will most likely have a second ultrasound. It is often at this ultrasound that you will be able to determine the sex of your baby (should you want to find out). While the second trimester seems to wind down in symptoms, there are still changes that are taking place within your body.
What changes can I expect during the second trimester? There are many changes your body will go through during the second trimester of pregnancy.
Backache. As you have increase in body weight, the pressure on your back increases as well, possibly making it sore and achy. Be sure to use a chair that provides good support for your back and sit up straight. When sleeping on your side, tuck a pillow between your legs. Make sure to wear shoes that provide good support and if you stand a lot, take frequent breaks. This is a good time to have a pregnancy massage as well, if you can afford it.
Bleeding gums. If you develop gums that are swollen and tender, you are not alone. Half of pregnant women experience bleeding gums which are caused by hormone changes. These changes send more blood to the gum, which in turn make them more sensitive and cause them to bleed more easily. Purchase a softer toothbrush and take extra care when you floss but be sure not to skip brushings, even though it may be tempting. Good dental hygiene is important for pregnant women as those who have gum disease are more likely to deliver a low birth weight baby and go into premature labor.
Breast Enlargement. Tenderness of the breasts tend to subside during the second trimester however, the breasts still grow significantly. Your breasts are preparing to feed your newborn. It might be more comfortable to purchase new bras - bras that offer more support and that are a size bigger than you normally wear.
Nosebleeds and nasal congestion. This is typical in the second trimester as the mucus membranes in your nose swell, due to the hormonal changes taking place. These changes to your nose might even cause your nose to bleed more often and more easily. It is important to check with your doctor prior to using over-the-counter medication. Instead, opt for a humidifier in your room as it will keep the air moist.
